Obit: Mr. Alan Armogum (1939–2008)

It is with deep sorrow and regret that we learn of the passing of a former CHS teacher, Mr.  Alan Armogum (Space-man).  Mr. Armogum was laid to rest in March in Toronto, Canada.

The son of a Headmaster, Mr. Armogum attended Queen’s College in Georgetown and  started teaching at CHS in 1960 until 1968.  Not a native Berbician, he lived with the Ramsammy family at Albion Front during this period.  He was the very first Biology teacher at CHS and was responsible for setting up the Biology lab and for making the subject popular among students.  He was an enthusiastic adherent of the Bahai faith and many of his CHS colleagues remember him for his intelligence and ready laughter.

We mourn the passing of Mr. Armogum.

Mr. Armogum’s class was the first science subject most of us were exposed to in those days. It opened a whole new vista for us. The highlight of my entire 5 years of Bioligy was dissecting a rabbit.(the crapaud was too gross of us girls).

Mr. Armogum also was an agent for Reader’s Digest. He sold subscriptions and took an interest in some of the topics published, and was happy to discuss them if a student approached him. He seemed to be different from many people, but we all had great respect for him as a teacher and human being.

    Thank you, Mr.Armogum.

I was fortunate to be in first class to be tought all three science subjects and took advantage of all which led to my present career.Of all the science masters mr Armogan was the most effective leaving us with an indelible memory of him firstly and then the subject biology.
He became my friend at the end of the 5 th year as he thought that i could help him to his true love.He tried ,but lost to a more handsome teacher in the same era.
I was in the middle of the love triangle in CHS and was always sorry for him.I never met him again as i went to study in England and vividly remember this episode as I read of his passing.Like my brother Latchman they were two pease in a pod in their love life.I leave the rest to your imagination as both girls are still alive.
For those who may think i am insensitive, i apologise, but i feel comelled to tell the stories with little details but some clues.
    Narine Datt.
