Rudolph ( CHS Grad’57) passed away on Jan.29, 2009  in London , England .

He was the second son of Philip and Angelina(Kempadoo) Ramotar Singh. Rudy, born and grew up in Port Mourant, Guyana, where he  attended St. Joseph ’s Anglican School and Corentyne High School  . He had a great passion for cricket, as this was his hobby, interest, favorite sport, past time and everything in between.  I was told that he was a member of the EICC (East Indian Cricket Club) in Guyana and his forte/handicap was being a wicket keeper. He played in a cricket match of India versus Guyana.

In 1957,after graduating from CHS, Rudy headed for Georgetown where he was employed at the General Post office.

1964—migrated to the mother country, England .

1967–1995,  worked  for the Civil Service as a Senior Executive Officer.

In  2003, he was introduced to the Queen of England in recognition for his outstanding performance as a cricketer .

During this period of time, Rudy continued to play  cricket for “Old Fincunians”in England until he was about 50 when he retired, a typical retirement age in England. He pursued another hobby and became a very keen gardener, he won two trophies for Pimlico Garden of the year.

Rudy was married for 43 years to Asha Shiela(Mohammed), a nurse . Together, they have three children( two girls, one boy) Amanda, Natasha and Marlon, all British subjects. There are also five young grandchildren, with  whom he would never be able to spend any time ,  nor with his surviving siblings who reside in the USA and Canada.

Siblings are:

Raymond Singh , USA (taught at RN and Rose hall High)

Tyrone Singh, USA (taught at St.Joseph’s Anglican School )

Pastors Desmond, Sherlock and Samuel Singh ( Canada ).

Selena ( Canada ),

Myrna (USA)

Yvonne( USA )

Rudy is the first of his siblings to depart in the sweet by and by. He had  great  charisma, an indeed wonderful  personality , very friendly and well known among our families. He kept in touch with Rita Butcher, sister of famous cricketer, Basil Butcher.  His uncle is the Guyanese author, Peter Kempadoo who once told me there are twelve authors in his family.

I would always cherish the memory of how I contacted Rudy in England, after I joined the family. After several years of non communication with his parents and siblings, I found an old address for him and wrote him saying”if you are alive, please reply with a simple hello and goodbye.”  My father in law , was extremely joyous and tearful when  Rudy replied and kept in touch thereafter.

I shared the same pain and loss with Asha, the children and the family, as Rudy and I had a special brother/sister relationship after locating him.

***Funeral arrangements are in the process.

May his soul rest in peace.

Time stood still whenever ‘Indian Memory Album’ was aired. Such was the awesome power of Ayube Hamid, the man behind the programme.Monday evenings, 8.30 pm. (7.30 pm now). A hush would descend upon thousands of households in Guyana. A hush followed by mounting excitement as familiar strains of ‘Suhani Raat’ and the distinctive voice of Ayube Hamid introduce ‘Indian Memory Album’. Oh, the ties that bind!

And respect for the man grew as he single-handedly brought the music of east and west together in the programme ‘East Meets West’, bridging the two arrangements with informative fillers, taking you down different and sometimes overlapping lanes of memory. Added to all of the above, he brings listeners all types of classical music on Thursdays and Sundays. Then striking up the rhythm, he brings listeners big band music on Saturdays in the ‘Ayube Hamid Show’ making ‘Everybody loves Saturday Night’, a signature of that programme.

He gave voice to the local music when he founded along with others, the live talent-promoting programme, ‘Local Indian Performers’. That programme showcased gifted singers like Gobin Ram, Mohan Nandu, Tilak, Davindra Pooran and Sudama, and helped hone the musical aspirations of others. To all of that add his contribution in the formation of the Gandhi Youth Organisation, the Muslim Youth Organisation and the setting up of the Indian Monument Gardens on Merriman’s Mall.

Uncle Ayube, as he is respectfully called, got his pioneering spirit from his grandfather who came to British Guiana in 1882 from Meerut, India, a village from where the revolt against the British started. His search in 1997 for his ancestral roots which took him to that village was one of the greatest pleasures of his life.

A life that was started in 1926 in a small rustic farming community named Danielstown on the Essequibo Coast of Guyana. He grew up in a Muslim home and attended Madrasah at the local Mosque where he fortified himself in the mystique of Urdu and Arabic. He excelled at St. Agnes Primary School and was awarded one of two scholarships offered to that region (at that time) which took him to the revered Queen’s College in Georgetown.

Georgetown became the base for his many exploits when, in 1952, he landed a job at the local radio station as an announcer. That was the beginning of a lifelong adventure in communication. He communicated well with his audiences so it was no surprise when, in 1953, he was given control of ‘Indian Memory Album’ at ZFY Radio on North Road (later moved to High Street and renamed Radio Demerara). Then he was entrusted the role of official emcee when International Indian Troupes visited Guyana, emceeing concerts featuring superstars like Lata Mangeshkar, Mukesh, Mohamed Rafi, Manna Dey and Kishore.

His sterling contribution to our musical and cultural heritage did not go unnoticed. He is the proud recipient of a Medal of Service (MS) and an Arrow of Achievement (AA) from the Government of Guyana. At Independence 1966, he was the recipient of a special Medal of Excellence. He was honoured by Muslim Youth Organisation, the Indian Commemoration Trust and the Indian Arrival Committee. However, his greatest reward was a marriage to Jinnette, his helpmate for some 46 years, graciously sharing with generations of Guyanese the man behind the mic.

I nominate Salim Khan, teacher at CHS in the fifties and early sixties for the Hall of Fame. During the time I was a teacher at CHS (1957-1961), Salim organized and captained a CHS Cricket Team that toured all  over the county of Berbice on weekends. The CHS cricket team became famous not only for winning but also as good ambassadors of their school. In addition it created a lasting bond between staff and students. Salim Khan later left to study at McGill University in Canada but his legacy should never be forgotten.

Gratitude (or lack of it) …

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Has anyone stopped to think how much time some of our grads put into the planning of these activities?  As far as I know, nearly all of the folks on the various committees have hectic professional and family lives but still make time for CHS-JCCSS related activities, sometimes a thankless sacrifice!!

I have recently heard of one nonentity who appears to be displeased with what these good folks are doing.  Give him a dunce cap and send him to the back of the class.

Phenomenal

This is the first time I am visiting the CHS-JCCSS website.  It was really nice to see the pictures of the last Reunion in NY.  They help to capture some moments again.  I hope you can publish more each week.  This is a website with a difference!

Thanks to this website I was able to get in touch with a buddy from way back.  This website reaches a world wide audience; its simply phenomenal. I got a call from Gordon Rambarran in NY.  Gordon was at last Summer’s Reunion.  He saw my blog on this website and I saw his pic in the gallery.  Beauty e-mailed me and folks I have not seen or heard from in three or four decades have been contacting me.

Some thing is not right- I hope its not a bad omen. My wife saw 2 red headed vultures (not blondes) perched on the pole at the back, then my mom made me a dish that I once had yrs ago, and to top it off there was 1 red headed vulture next to my car at the stop sign 2 wks ago.  Is someone giving me a sign? Scary …

I am at the left squatting with what actually is a school transcript in my hand; that I would need for school in the US as I was leaving that summer. That being the reason I took my camera that day; for the memories.  I placed the pic on facebook as well and I have quite a few classmates commenting on it.  I just added you on facebook as a friend.  Can you please approve my facebook request?  There you will see the comments on who is who or, if you prefer, once they are all identified I will email you the names.  Thanks.
