PRESS RELEASE

AIDANA SORAYA, A TOUR DE FORCE FOR GUYANA THEATRE

GEMS Theatre Productions will stage the Premiere Production of ‘For Love  of Aidana Soraya’ at the National Cultural Centre on 14th May, 2009.

The Play, by Guyanese Ronan Blaze, is a “tour de force” for Guyana’s theatre. It confronts head-on, the ever present challenge of the doctrinaire teachings of two of Guyana’s major religions, the Hindu and Muslim faiths, as they impact, in a real life drama, on the lives of a family who have intermarried.

Every Guyanese, whether Hindu, Muslim or Christian, should see this intensely human drama.

The Play delves into the frailty of human beings torn between their commitment to religious tradition and practice and their abiding love for each other and encourages us to reach beyond the religious and racial barriers which so frequently divide us as a people and a nation.

The Play is produced and directed by Gem Madhoo-Nascimento and features the very best of Guyana’s actors, notably, Richard Narine, Sonya Yarde, Ajay Baksh, Nazim Hussain, Dimple Mendonca, Rajan Tiwari, Michael Ignatius, Kirk Jardine, Sherry Ann Dyal, Howard Lorrimer,Godfrey Naughton, Derek Gomes and Zaheer Abbass..

The Play is set in a small mixed Hindu, Christian and Muslim village called Elysee, existing in the author’s imagination, somewhere in the countryside of Guyana

Jonathan, played by Ajay Baksh, who is Hindu, is faced with the trauma of his young Muslim wife, Aidana Soraya, played by Dimple Mendonca,, who is dying from an incurable cancer and is determined to fulfill her wish to be buried in her family plot in the Islamic cemetery next to the village Mosque. But both the Hindu and Muslim communities have been hostile from the very beginning, to the marriage and are opposed to her being buried in either the Muslim or Hindu cemeteries.

Jonathan’s Uncle, Sohrab, played by Richard Narine, an elder of the Muslim community,  and himself once married to a Hindu whom he forced to become a Muslim and has lived to deeply regret after she died, passionately embraces Jonathan’s wishes and eloquently takes up his cause.

Imam Kassim, played by Rajan Tiwari, is, however, reluctant, to agree to the burial, whereas, the Hindu Pandit, Nehal, played by Zaheer Abbass, is prepared to offer burial of Aidana Soraya in the Hindu cemetery.  But the Hindus extremists in the village are ready to violently oppose any such idea.

Doctrine confronts reason. Accusations and threats fly fast and furious and in one of the most telling lines of the Play, Elder Sohrab declares “we are our own instruments of torture”.

The Premiere performance on May 14th , takes place in the Recital Hall and will be preceded by a cocktail reception. Tickets are $2,500. Other performances are on May 15th-17th at 8.00p.m. and 4.00p.m.. These tickets are $1200, $1000 and $500 and are available at  the National Cultural Centre, Nigel’s Supermarket and City Mall.

Ivan Madray: A Tribute

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

I had hoped to collaborate with Walter Ramdeholl, former teacher at CHS, to write a tribute to Ivan Madray. Rishi requested this of me. However, I have been unable to locate Mr. Ramdeholl even with Syd Latchana’s assistance. I know that Walter and Ivan were buddies and it would have been nice to commemorate with him.

I see that Beauty (Rawana) Ramotar, in one of her most eloquent blogs, has written movingly of Ivan and his contribution to  Port Mourant. It will be difficult to improve on Beauty’s masterpiece. When I was a little boy attending English school (St. Joseph’s Anglican) in the 40’s, Ivan Madray was attending Roman School (St. Xavier’s Roman Catholic School). Since cricket was our master passion, we all knew of  Ivan Madray. We knew that he stood as a formidable obstacle  to us in our quest for the championship of schools. I still remember that in 1948, although we had Basil Butcher, Roman School wrested the championship from us. We batted first and made 150 runs. Ivan Madray and Rohan Kanhai, opening batsmen for Roman School, surpassed this total with no loss of wicket! In those days Ivan was an equally feared batsman as Rohan. Had he not decided to concentrate on spin bowling, his future in international cricket would have been much different. Ivan Madray, in his early years, was a batsman  of quintessential excellence.

My brother-in-law, Arnold Rawana, tells me that Ivan came from a relatively well-to-do home but he was never condescending to his peers. In fact, said Arnold, he was an extremely generous guy. Ivan is nearly four years my senior. I do remember looking up to him with great pride and  admiration. Whether it was in soft ball cricket (underhan) or formal cricket, Ivan was a man of extraordinary talent. I remember many a batsman stretching forward to play his leg spinners, being caught outside of their crease, and Rohan Kanhai promptly removing the bails! The combination of Ivan Madray as leg spinner and Rohan Kanhai as wicket keeper is one of the finest memories of my cricket life.

On behalf of my generation (a dying breed), and all of Port Mourant, I extend our condolences to the family of our hero.

We have just been informed by Julip Singh ’62 of the passing of Ivan Madray, CHS grad and West Indies cricketing legend.

Ivan, who was on vacation in his home village of Port Mourant, took ill on his way to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, en route to England, on Wednesday. He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he died yesterday Thursday April 23, 2009.

Ivan was born July 2, 1934 at Port Mourant. He made his first class debut for British Guiana vs Australia on April 20, 1955 and made his Test debut v Pakistan on February 5, 1958. He played two Test matches for the West Indies as a right-handed batsman and a leg-break googly bowler.

Ivan was one of several outstanding cricketers to emerge from Port Mourant under guidance of former West Indies batting star Sir Clyde Walcott. Other players to play with Ivan included Basil Butcher, Rohan Kanhai and Joe Solomon – all CHS-JCCSS grads.

The funeral service for Ivan Madray will take place on Sunday April 26, 2009 at 3.00pm in Port Mourant.

Ivan Samuel Madray graduated from CHS in the late 1940’s.  We will try to get the exact year.

The CHS-JCCSS Alumni extend deepest sympathies to Ivan’s wife and two children, his five grand-children, his brothers Walter, Arjune (taught at Rose Hall School), Moore, Ramesh, and their three sisters. (Our thanks to Beauty for providing this info).
