It is with deep sadness that I inform you of the passing of Esau Madramootoo aka Teacher Mootoo.  Uncle Esau passed away February 1st. at his home in Rose Hall Town, Corentyne. He was headmaster at Auchline school. He also taught at several mission schools in Guyana. He was the father of CHS alumni Norma, Mustaq and Shahaireen, father-in-law of CHS graduate Dr Ashton Veramallay.

After retirement he remained active in church active; voluntarily taught  music and guitar lessons to the children in his neighborhood. Teacher Mootoo's home in Rose Hall housed many former 'top side' students who attended CHS and Rose Hall High school.

My condolences to Norma, Shereen, Mustaq and Nall on the passing of their beloved father. Esau was the brother of the photographer (Mootoo Photography). Both of their wives, Raj and Rohini are first cousins to my mom. I will have to break this sad news as gently as possible to my mom who is now 90 years old.
We are once again indebted to this site for such timely news.

  5. Arnold Lachana Says:

Mr. Esau Mootoo had lived a long, rich and satisfying life. He was a teacher, cricketer, musician, preacher, gentleman, friend, neighbour , respectable icon in Rose Hall Town. Those who knew him would add affable, humble, courteous to fine human being. I last met him in 2002  in front of Dr. Deonarine's house in Rose Hall Town . He had lost some weight and looked a bit frail. He apologized for not attending my brother's funeral in Georgetown. The travelling was a bit too much to do in one day. He chided me for not visiting him at his home.

Prior to that I met him at his grand-daughter's wedding in Richmond, Indiana. At age 82, he played the guitar and  sang to the amazement of all the guests. That was quite a treat. Mr. Mootoo was a member of our extended family. His daughter, Norma and I were classmates. Norma is married to my cousin, Dr. Ashton Veeramallay.

To Norma, Shereen, Mustaq and Nall, all the grandchildren , especially, Stasia, on behalf of the Lachana's, I send our deepest condolences. May His Soul Rest in Eternal Peace. He is finally with Aunty Raj, the light of his life whom he adored.

Uncle Esau was a family friend of many people in Rose Hall and neighboring villages.  He would sit for hours chatting with family members as he moved on his famous bicycle from place to place. It was awesome to see him towing Aunty Raj on his bicycle with his guitar infront. He was a man held with the highest esteem wherever he goes. He has lived a good life,,,,,,long life and I am sure he has fulfilled his mission here on earth.
Deepest  sympathy to  the family on their great loss. May his soul rest in peace.

Truly it's an end of era. Rose Hall Town awarded him 'Man of the Year'. Former students of his are now successful in various parts of the world. He was the 'Chandisingh' for elementary students.

My  condolences go out to the Mootoo  family. Mr Mootoo taught at Achlyne Scots School when I attended there. He was a very friendly person. He was also a very good cricketer who represented Berbice as a left arm leg spinner at the same time with the Port Mourant legends. It is my understnding that  Assad Fudadin, one of Guyana's best current cricketers is his grand son. Assad Fudadin already played for West indies A Team and is knocking on the doors of the West Indies regular team. He is another JCCHS graduate that make us all proud. Definitely on the Hall of Fame list. My condolences go out to Assad and his parents as well.

My condolences to Mr. Mootoo's family. I taught with Mr. Mootoo at Friends Scots School, EB Berbice in 1970. He was instrumental
in helping me get the job there. He was a gentleman and a scholar. We travelled together to and from school and he also
arraged a special car for us from N/A to Friends and back daily. He was a good and religious man that loved God. His humility,
simplicity, and charisma are worth emulating. Peace be unto him.

Can't recall Mr. Esau Mootoo but I do know Norma and Ashton very well indeed. My condolences.
It is gratifying to read these expressions of gratitude from our alumni. Our hearts are in the right place.
Left arm bowler eh? I always had difficulty with them especially when they pitched between bat and pad. Oh, how I miss the glory days! The vicarious enjoyment of our present greats , though very enjoyable, does not come close to the real thing.
God bless Esau's family in their bereavement. Their comfort lies in the realization of a life extremely well-lived attested to by witnesses of distinction! The CHS-JCCS family is alive and well.

  13. Loretta Lachmansingh Says:

Stan and I extend condolences to the Mootoo family. Norma and  I were classmates at CHS and, we both taught, along with our spouses at Belvedere high school.
May your loved one rest in peace.

  14. julius Nathoo Says:

Norma and Ashton, may the delectable  memories of our blessed youth and the condolences of your devoted friends sustain you at this time. I know that in remembrance of things past, you will keep on living and loving  and , in the words of Loretta's favourite lyric " giving the heavens above  more than just a passing glance" as you continue to dance to life's great poetry and music.

  15. Chandra Singh Says:

I was there only in November and saw him at his nephew's home. He was very pleasant to me and he was riding his bicycle and looking healthy. I do not know what happen but I am very saddened to hear this. My condolences to all his extended family and his children and grandchildren.

  16. AK Jagnandan Says:

Riding a bicycle in November. …at age 95 .That is something to behold. Kudos to him.

  17. Chandra Singh Says:

It is very true that he rode the bicycle upto that age and he was 89 not 95. By the way this was in Guyana. Mr. Mootoo never lived in USA but he did visit many times. His wife died years ago in USA when they were visiting. I very sad about his passing seeing that he was looking so healthy and he and his nephew were even arguing about the Guyana election.
