A Mon Repos family lost their home and all their possessions when fire struck a few days ago. It was the home of Pooran’s sister. Pooran is remembered as one of the Enmore Martyrs who was fatally shot on June 16, 1948 while protesting for better working conditions at Enmore Estate. He was only nineteen years old at the time. His wife Parbattie recently died at the age of eighty-nine. The dispossessed family was visited by Mr. Anil Nandlall who made a generous donation and has promised to mobilize additional support from other organizations. Mr. Nandlall took several photographs. One which caught my eye was that of the family’s humble mandir (prayer place) which was spared by the fire.
