In classical Latin the phrase translates to “oh what times oh what customs.” It was first used by Marcus Tullius Cicero in Rome in the year 70 BC and there is hardly a week that goes by that I don’t use it myself. Last week I watched the halftime 2020 Super Bowl entertainment provided by Jennifer Lopez and Shakira and sponsored by Pepsi. I was embarrassed by what passes for entertainment in these times. Just to give you an idea of what things were like when I was growing up here is a pic of Miss America 1962. Her name is Maria Fletcher. Her classmate Don told me Maria was not only beautiful and charming but friendly and down-to-earth. I am proud to be “old school.” I am also proud of the Latin they taught me in school.
