Waveney Benjamin  - Class of 1965

Waveney (Benjamin ’65) Lloyd, wife of former West Indies Cricket Captain Clive Lloyd, attended CHS, graduating in 1965.

Waveney is from Port Mourant. She trained as a nurse here in the UK where she met Clive. At that time, he was perhaps one of the best cover fieldsmen in the game and a rising star in the West Indies team. Of course, Lancashire County Cricket Club snapped him up and the rest is history.

I think it is important to know that over the 30 odd years Waveney was married to Clive she kept that common touch and has always been kind to people in general and to her ‘country men’ in particular. For example, at the height of the success and fame of the West Indies team with Clive as captain, she often gave away high value tickets to test matches to many Guyanese especially to people from our area. Often, these tickets included lunch and tea among the other guests of both the teams and were not for sale. She took them off her husband’s allocation!

It was often told to me in the Port Mourant – Albion area, that people on the Corentyne believed that Waveney was crucial in making them see the actual World Cup when the West Indies won the first one. She and Clive took it down our way. Also, she has always conducted herself in a way which attracted favourable comments. Many Guyanese here in the UK do not believe that she hails from Port Mourant, Corentyne, I guess owing to a Georgetown – centric view that every famous Guyanese came out of G/T! Waveney is a lovely person.
